I did not know this existed until today, but I feel like I have wanted one forever. If this could be reprogrammed/adjusted to track a GPS or radio signal rather than just fly patterns I would already have one on order.

LA100 is the world's first aircraft designed for the users with no piloting background. It is a fully autonomous UAV (drone). Just connect the battery, launch it, and it will come back to you after 5 minutes of flight (limited for safety purposes) at the height of 80m-100m.

Edit: A friend sent me a link to another cool drone that would be both more cost effective and more useful for getting car/bike footage, which is really what I would use it for most of the time.

It could be programmed, you just need to know the language and use Ardupilot.

I like the packaging of this little drone. If it could follow a car for a few minutes shooting video we would have excellent video to work with. I toyed with the idea of building a quadocopter or something with an Arduino but I just don't have time for even more projects.

There is target tracking software out there and available, it is doable with this drone no problem :)

that being said, there are much cheaper airframes out there than what the LA100 costs.

This type of unit could be perfect at a race track. I wonder if it could "lap" the track from above. If it has the type of maneuverability that would be necessary. If one were to build their own how cheaply could it be done? For a grand no way, for $600 possibly, but for something around $300 I'd be very interested.

Yeah, a fixed wing can lap the track, you just have to program in the waypoints. 300... is doable, but its going to take a lot of hunting for used parts. 600 will comfortably build you a decent fixed wing platform with ardupilot.
